Hillarys was actually named after an early settler Bertram John Hillary, who fought at Gallipoli during World War I, and settled on the beach front at Hillarys with his family around 1930 and for many years the Hillary family were the only residents of the area.

The Shire of Wanneroo and the R & I bank began developing the area in the 1960’s and in 1971 they asked the Western Australian State Government to gazette a new suburb there which they subsequently did and planned a town centre which ultimately became the Westfield Whitford City Shopping Centre.

Hillary is made up predominantly of residential dwellings but also includes facilities like the shopping centre, Hillary’s Boat Harbour and a number of private and government schools.

Being essentially a coastal suburb, homes in Hillarys are constantly being besieged by the small Coastal Brown Ant who enjoy the loose soils in the area. The ant’s presence is evidenced by sand mounds seen in pavers and slabs and controlling this pest can be a challenge!
